Chandigarh University student Reetika Hooda has become the first-ever Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Under-23 World Wrestling Championships. She defeated USA's former U20 World Champion Kennedy Blades in the 76kg category with a score of 9-2.
This is a remarkable achievement for Reetika, who switched to the 76kg category for the first time at this championship. She had previously competed in the 72kg category for two years.
Reetika is a student of BA (final year) at Chandigarh University under a 100% sports scholarship. She is also a recipient of INR 12,000 monthly from the university that takes care of coaching facility and special diet.
Chandigarh University Chancellor Satnam Singh Sandhu congratulated Reetika on her achievement and said that it is a matter of pride for the entire university fraternity. He added that Chandigarh University has always emphasized on sports and features world-class sports infrastructure on the campus to allow students to prepare for a career in respective games.
Reetika's achievement is an inspiration to young sportspersons everywhere, and it shows that India is producing world-class wrestlers.
