Kerala's Kaziah Liz Mejo Crowned Miss Universe India 2026
For a 19-year-old who once said she couldn't bear to keep an unfiltered photograph of herself, Sunday night in Jaipur ended with the sort of moment most young women only rehearse in their heads. Kaziah Liz Mejo, a law student from Mavelikkara in Kerala's Alappuzha district, was crowned Miss Universe India 2026 at Zee Studios, with outgoing titleholder Manika Vishwakarma placing the crown on her head and handing over the sash after her own year-long reign.
Mejo emerged from a field of 52 finalists — 31 representatives from states and Union Territories, 20 wildcard entrants and one non-resident Indian candidate — after months of preliminary rounds staged across Jaipur, Indore, Bengaluru and New Delhi. The result made her the third titleholder produced under the Glamanand Group, which acquired India's Miss Universe franchise in 2024 and has since delivered Rhea Singha in its inaugural edition, Manika Vishwakarma last year and now Mejo.
Behind the tiara sits a résumé that reads younger than most first-time national winners. Though she carries the Kerala sash, much of Mejo's early life was spent in Abu Dhabi, where she completed her schooling before turning to law and, in parallel, competitive pageantry. Her international debut came at Miss Teen International 2025, where she finished as first runner-up. Earlier this year, she added the Miss Universe Kerala state title to her wall — the last box she needed to tick before Jaipur.
"This title is not just an achievement, it is a big responsibility. Representing India on the international stage is a matter of pride for me," Mejo said in a statement released by the pageant organisers after her win.
The night's other headlines belonged to the runners-up. Tamil Nadu's Vaishnavi Gannesh was named first runner-up and additionally crowned Miss International India 2026, walking away with two international assignments in a single evening. Gujarat's Anushri Satavlekar finished second runner-up, followed by Maharashtra's Tejaswini Shrivastava as third runner-up and Uttarakhand's Anubha Vashist Chaudhary as fourth. Each of the top five was asked to deliver a 40-second closing statement to the jury in the final round — a compressed test of poise, clarity and conviction that often decides these contests.
The jury itself signalled the ambitions of this year's edition. It was headlined by Sushmita Sen — the 1994 Miss Universe and India's first-ever winner of the global crown — alongside former national titleholders Urvashi Rautela, Celina Jaitly and 2024 winner Rhea Singha. Film producer Pragya Kapoor, entrepreneur Visha Ladhia and reigning Miss Charm 2025 Anna Blanco completed the panel, giving finalists a room stacked with both showbiz and business heft to answer to.
For young Indian women watching this journey unfold, Mejo's win carries weight beyond the crown. India has not produced a Miss Universe winner since Harnaaz Sandhu lifted the title in 2021, and every year that gap grows, the spotlight on her successor sharpens. National Director Nikhil Anand framed the platform in familiar terms: a stage for women from across the country to showcase talent, personality and leadership.
Next stop is San Juan, Puerto Rico, where the 75th Miss Universe pageant will be held in November 2026. Between now and then, Mejo will move through intensive grooming, fitness, styling and interview prep — the standard runway to a global finale. She will do it, though, as a teenager who spoke openly about self-doubt long before she ever wore a sash. For a lot of readers, that may end up being the more powerful story than the tiara itself.
